World building is very useful guide in creating your world in the story that you’re writing. As a matter of fact, this is the very essence and at the same time, foundation of a good science fiction or fantasy story as well as other genres. Well thought world building can help in adding richness to the writing while providing valuable information to your readers, which makes them feel more attached to the plot and characters. How writers must proceed on the world building to their fiction then? To be able to know more about this subject, we are going to break it into 3 main categories and these are imaginary worlds, alternate reality and actual locations.
With the imaginary worlds, the construction of the whole fictional universes is found mainly in fantasy genres wherein alternate reality, it is re-imagining the details of our present world which is actually popular to writers whose focus is mostly in science fiction and last but not the least, actual locations or the invocation of real place of our world that’s used in novels without adding any fantasy elements.
Creating an imaginary world is one of the most challenging and daunting types of world-building. It is oftentimes used in science fiction and fantasy to which the writer conjures every detail of his/her world from scratch which includes geography, lore, language, history, characters, politics, religion and social customs.
It does makes sense that creating these said elements to build the fictional world can be hard and challenging as well and being able to decide where it should start is sometimes impossible. On the other hand, you may look at some authors like J.R.R Tolkien, J.K. Rowling if ever you need some inspiration and think that it is impossible to make such.
Obviously, not all writers have the ability or capacity to create a functional and fictional language but budding world builders could still follow the prior authors as a start. As a matter of fact, there is a technique that can b used in building your imaginary world and that is by finding which aspect you are fond the most. It is best that you focus on this element as it will help you in building your story and world from there.
Sooner or later, you’ll get the hang of it and it would help in convincing people of everything you worked for; you just need to be consistent in your world. By objectively looking at the elements of your world and asking few questions based from it, you can get this done. Do this exercise as if you’re describing your country or home to someone else who knows totally nothing about it.
